BEHIND THE SEAMS

“There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in.” — Graham Greene

I’m Debra Da Costa — a Haitian Canadian designer and the creative force behind La Canuck Kreyòl (La Kuh·nuhk Kree·owl). “Canuck” means Canadian, and “Kreyòl” represents my Haitian roots. Together, they define the vibrant blend of influences that shape my work.

One of my earliest memories is watching my mother hand-stitch quilts with incredible care and patience. I was just seven, but that moment lit a creative spark that continues to guide me. Fashion quickly became part of my identity, not just for its beauty, but for its power to uplift, empower, and include.

My personal style leans bold, colorful, and unapologetically unique. Whether I’m sourcing exquisite fabrics or upcycling something from my closet, I’m drawn to edgy silhouettes, vibrant palettes, and anything that feels joyfully expressive. Art, film, architecture, and global culture constantly inspire me.

I showcase my creative journey on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, from statement-making outfits to behind-the-scenes of my design process. But beyond sharing, I create. I design one-of-a-kind pieces for clients who want something meaningful, personal, and beautifully made, no fast fashion, just thoughtful design that speaks to who you are.
